Consist of a self-contained unit that includes the engine, gearbox and propeller or jet drive, designed to be affixed to the outside of the transom. The Outboard is the most common motorised method of propelling small boats. As well as providing propulsion, outboards provide steering control as they are designed to pivot over their mountings and control the direction of thrust.

As opposed to an outboard motor where an engine is mounted outside of the hull of the craft, an inboard motor is an engine enclosed within the hull of the boat, usually connected to a propulsion screw by a driveshaft.
The engine is located inboard just forward of the transom (stern) and provides power to the drive unit (outdrive) located outside the hull.
MerCruiser’s comprehensive selection of drive systems – from the most popular sterndrive in the world, Alpha One, to the robust Bravo Series drives – is the envy of the industry. View range of MerCruiser Sterdrive Engines
